Types of Garage Door Opening Systems

There are several different types of roller garage door opening systems. One of the most commonly used is the roller mechanism. This type of garage door opens vertically and rolls itself around at the top within a compact cylinder.

The small sections of the garage door have to be quite small in order to allow a tight roll to be made when it is opened. This is why roller garage doors have rather thin, but robust horizontal panels rather than a smooth finish.

Roller garage doors come with many benefits. They are convenient, neat and best of all is that they take up very little room. This is great news if you want to hang storage shelves from the ceiling of your garage. Both the garage door and the opening mechanism are as compact as possible, and neither protrudes out of the garage opening itself.

If you have limited space and need to park your car close to the door, whether this is outside or inside the garage, then the garage door can still be operated as it opens vertically, rather than protruding out into your driveway or into the garage space, like an up and over garage door would. Unlike other garage door types, this also means that you have maximum use of your garage space, particularly near to the ceiling. Roller doors come with an automatic opening as standard. They are available in a variety of colours and finishes too.

The traditional options to operate a roller garage door

We immediately think of a roller garage door gliding up at the mere press of a button, often from the inside of the car. In fact, most modern roller garage doors are operated in this very way. However, as the modern motor to operate a roller garage door will require an electrical supply, there are manual options that are still available.

A manual lift up and pull down operation is probably the simplest and most traditional way to open a roller garage door. This is often found on properties that do not have an electrical supply to the garage, which may often be situated a distance from the main property.

There is also another manual hand chain roller garage door operation, where the user pulls the chain in the direction of the closing or opening roller garage door.

The single phase tubular motor via an up and down remote switch. These are quite common in the domestic setting.

The industrial three phase powered motor via an up and down switch. This is more common in a commercial setting such as loading bay roller shutters.

Please remember that the installation time for roller garage doors can be longer than other types of garage doors, and a power supply will be required within your garage in order to fit a modern, automated roller garage door.

Usage of roller garage door opening systems

  • Manual operations are used for roller garage doors with low to medium frequency of use.
  • The chain operation is used for roller garage doors with low to medium frequency of use.
  • The single phase tube motor is used for low frequency use, such as on a domestic property, although this depends on how often the garage door will be operated.
  • The 3 phase industrial motor is used for medium to high frequency use of the roller garage door. This roller garage door opening system is the most popular for longevity of service.
  • The most common roller garage door opening system specification is the single phase electric tube motor or the 3 phase electric motor.
